Preview new plays at the Women’s Theatre Alliance Scene Showcase

My new play is so new it isn’t even completely written, but you can see a couple of scenes from it in The Women’s Theatre Alliance of Chicago’s New Play Development Workshop Scene Showcase. Scenes from six new plays will be performed this Wednesday, May 17th at Stage 773 at 1225 W Belmont Avenue in Chicago. The show starts at 7:30 and tickets are $10 at the door. Here is the full list of plays being showcased:

  • Eros and Psyche, Play by Megan Mackie, Directed by Alison Aske
  • Bluebeard’s First Wife by Christopher Donaldson, Directed by Patricia Tinsley
  • Endeavor Mind By Kim Z. Dale, Directed by Mary Heitert
  • Mr. Fischer Unraveled by Jane Goldenberg, Directed by Claire Redfield
  • Everything by K. Zoë Graham, Directed by Cheri McGuire
  • Jenni “with a heart over the i” Lee Sweetwater by Rachel Bykowski, Directed by Lexi Saunders

The shows vary in themes from porn to poetry. Here is a brief overview of my play Endeavor Mind:

Claudine Delaney craves intellectual excitement, so she volunteers to be one of the first human subjects for a procedure that augments the brain using computer technology. The scientific results are impressive but put her marriage and her life at risk. Only her daughter can save her.

Sounds cool, right? Of course it does. If if you are in or near Chicago on Wednesday, come see our shows. There is more info in the Facebook event.

And yes, this is play for which I was crowdsourcing character names a while back. Here are the names I ended up with and the actors playing each role in the showcase:

CLAUDINE DELANEY – Anna Dunbar

RAY DELANEY – Andrew Pierce

ADDISON DELANEY – Katherine Bellantone

FRANCES WESTMORE – Deveon Bromby

I don’t remember exactly who suggested most of the names. I do know that the character of Ray is named after Ray Salazar from The White Rhino: A Chicago Latino English Teacher blog because he asked me nicely and I liked the sound of it.
I hope to see you at Stage 773 on Wednesday, and I hope that once I write the whole thing there will be many more opportunities for people to see it!
