Another summer of not going to the beach enough

I had said this would be the year. This would be the year when we wouldn’t get to the end of the summer and realize that we hadn’t been to the beach as a family or had only been once. After all, we went to the beach on Memorial Day weekend. We were off to a great start! We live a mile away from the beach. This should be easy! No excuses! But then summer itself got in the way.

We did not go to the beach. We were too busy with street festivals and food trucks. Block parties and backyard barbecues. Playgrounds and play dates. The zoo and the amusement park. Hammock naps and bike rides. Swimming and soccer. Sprinklers and squirt guns. Glow sticks and fireflies. Board games and book challenges.

It was a good summer, but we did not go to the beach. Well, technically we were on the beach to watch 4th of July fireworks, but that is a different type of beach outing. We had lunch at the Waterfront Cafe, which meant we were by the water but not on the beach. My nanny took the kids to the beach almost every week, so at least they didn’t miss out. But I wanted to go the beach, too! Waah!

Finally, it was Labor Day weekend, the last chance workout of summer fun, and we went to the beach. In fact, we went twice. It was wonderful.

Next summer we will will go to the beach more often. Definitely. I swear we will! Unless we don’t.
