October 30th
Miss Petra called! I thought her show had ended when I paid and left, but she actually did it. She convened with the spirits or whatever and found a way to help me.
When I went back to her shop she locked the door behind me. The first thing she told me is that she had no way to stop the the Man with the Shadow Voice from killing me tomorrow.
I thought, “Then why I did I come here, you crazy old woman!”
But she did have something. She did come through with something. She thinks she found a loophole in the Man’s plan. A small one but better than the nothing that I had.
I carried my hope home in a small wax paper envelope. I put the powder in hot water and drank it as instructed. It tasted like soapy Indian food.
I don’t know if I truly believe Miss Petra’s claims, but I feel more relaxed than I have in a long time. Maybe what she gave me wasn’t magic. Maybe it was just some sort of drug. Whatever it was, I’m not scared anymore.
