Is the word “ladies” gender neutral?

Is “guys” gender neutral? Some say yes and use guys to refer to groups of men and women. Others say guys is sexist, which is why I made a list of 40 gender neutral alternatives to saying “you guys.” One word I did not consider when making that list was “ladies,” but why shouldn’t I? If “guys” can be gender neutral why not “ladies” as well?

This is why I was amused to see t-shirts for sale that say “Ladies” is Gender Neutral.

Ladies is gender neutral tshirt

Not only do the t-shirts make a good point, they support a good cause. All profits go to Outreachy, an organization that provides internships for people from groups traditionally underrepresented in the tech industry. (They currently accept cis and trans women, trans men, genderqueer people, and people of any gender who are black/African American, Hispanic/Latin, American Indian, Alaska Native, Native Hawaiian, or Pacific Islander.)

The t-shirts come, appropriately, in several unisex style/cut options because body shape does not equal gender. They also have a nice gender neutral butterfly on them. (Go ahead, tell me if it’s a boy or a girl butterfly!) And the shirts come in a wide variety of colors.

Did I order one of these shirts? Damn right I did! In a nice gender neutral fuschia!

Hey ladies (including men), do you want to be cool like me and own your own “Ladies” is Gender Neutral shirt? Of course you do! You can buy yours at interruptdesigns.threadless.com. Prices range from $20-$25 depending on the style of shirt.
