The Emptying: A holiday-week horror story

It started days ago. Everyone said goodnight to each other as usual, but the next day people were missing. The day after that there were even fewer of us. Each day more people vanish. Normally crowded trains and hallways grow eerily quiet and empty.

“Who will be here tomorrow?” You dare not ask the question for fear of the answer.

Eventually they will all disappear. Eventually there will be one person left. One last person to stay or go. Who will it be? Will it be you? Will it be me?

It’s like a horror movie, but in this story you do not want to be the person who lasts longest.

This is not a survival story. This is not the story of a serial killer or zombie attack or a mysterious disease. This is the story of going to work during a holiday week.

If you are working today (as I am) I wish you productivity and an early dismissal. And to everyone, I wish you a Merry Christmas, a Happy New Year, or just a few lovely days off.
