I spent the day waiting for Miss Petra to call. Telling myself “soon” doesn’t necessarily mean today.
I searched for her online again like a girl with an obsessive crush. This time though my eyes were drawn to the negative reviews not the positive ones. “Rip off.” “Fake.” “Liar.”
I started feeling foolish. I gave money, too much money, to some woman who wouldn’t even pretend to be able to save my life.
When I was with her she seemed so kind and earnest that for a while I believed she could help, but as I replay it in my head I see it was an entertainment and nothing more. Miss Petra? How cheesy. That can’t be her real name.
No one, particularly a storefront witch, can change the fact that I’m going to die. I’m ashamed I ever took such an idea seriously.
