What if the movie “Say Anything” were made today?

In the movie Say Anything Lloyd Dobler (played by John Cusack) decribes his career aspirations like this:

I don’t want to sell anything, buy anything, or process anything as a career. I don’t want to sell anything bought or processed, or buy anything sold or processed, or process anything sold, bought, or processed, or repair anything sold, bought, or processed. You know, as a career, I don’t want to do that.

Say Anything is 25 years old. If it were made today this is what Lloyd Dobler might choose to say about social media jobs:

I don’t want to curate anything, hashtag anything, or montetize anything as a career. I don’t want to curate anything hashtagged or monetized, or hashtag anything curated or monetized, or monetize anything curated or hashtagged, or engage with anything curated, hashtagged, or monetized You know, as a career, I don’t want to do that.

Another difference would, of course, be that Lloyd Dobler is not likely to stand outside Diane’s window with a boom box over his head. Since holding an iPhone over his head isn’t very romantic I imagine that Lloyd would hack into Diane’s computer or Bluetooth speakers and have the music come out of her own room. 2014 Lloyd Dobler could definitely be a hacker.

What do you think Say Anything might be like today? (And, no. I’m not suggesting that anyone remake this lovely movie.)
