There are enough things that I love about Chicago in the summer that this prompt could have spawned another of my titular 40 items lists, but there are two places that stand out when I think about summer in Chicago: Lake Michigan and Crown Fountain.

Enjoying Lake Michigan

Waterfront Cafe
Waterfront Cafe, Chicago

Proximity to Lake Michigan adds an extra chill to Chicago in winter, but in the summer the blue water and beaches are like an instant vacation running along the eastern edge of the city. I love to enjoy the beach (with copious amounts of sunscreen) or have food and drinks while taking in the view from the Waterfront Cafe. Just seeing people playing volleyball on the shore as I go down Lake Shore Drive makes me smile.

Splashing in Crown Fountain

I love Crown Fountain because it is a combination of public art, a splash pad and technology. The two towering glass brick walls morph between images of various faces until they purse their lips and spill water onto the crowds splashing below. I particularly love that my kids haven’t figured out when the faces are going to spit making it always a surprise. And yes, while we’re there we always stop to see our reflections in The Bean.
